What to expect at your first lesson

The first thing we’ll do is discuss your past, present and future training, performances and goals.

I will assess the quality of your range from the bottom to the top of your voice. This is the assessment section of the lesson.

Next, we’ll talk about the challenges you’ve been having vocally and their root causes without getting too technical or boring (even though there is a ton of cool research I do as a voice teacher).

Then I will prescribe exercises tailored specifically to improve your voice.  You should feel an improvement in range and quality quickly.

From there, the sky is the limit. Often, we’ll work on songs you love to develop your voice. Whether it’s increasing range, singing high notes without falsetto, or getting ready for a world tour, it’s important we get right to work on your voice.

The only thing that you should bring is an idea of a song you might like to work on. We will normally try to have you sing a song during your first lesson to apply the exercises we cover.

I am now 68 yrs old and still passionate about singing can i still improve my vocal range?

    • by Matt Ramsey Posted February 12, 2018 10:50 am

Hello Yance, thanks for your message. The answer is: Absolutely!
I’ve written an article on this subject you can check out here: https://ramseyvoice.com/too-old-to-sing/

The bottom line is that while the voice changes as you age, the old saying “if you don’t use it, you lose it” still applies.

Your best chance of increasing your range (no matter your age) is working on exercises in private lessons that are custom tailored to your voice.

To get started, you can book a “Free First Voice Lesson” in the panel above if you’re in Austin, TX.
If you’re outside Austin, select the “Free Skype Vocal Evaluation”.

      Happy singing,
      Matt

    • by Matt Ramsey Posted February 26, 2018 9:56 am

Hello Kaveena, what happens when you try to sing the higher notes in your range?
Do you crack, flip, or pull and strain?

  • by Brandon Posted September 6, 2019 7:24 pm

Can you help me get ready for the next musical, or is musical theatre singing different than normal singing?

    • by Matt Ramsey Posted September 7, 2019 9:54 am

Hey Brandon, while every style of music is different, good vocal technique stays the same.

I work with students in rock, pop and music theater so I’d love to help you.

Go ahead and book a lesson when you’re ready.

  • by Lincoln Posted September 10, 2019 12:52 pm

I’ve been singing all my life, mostly things I’m interested in from music I know well. I’ve never taken a single class or vocal lesson. I’m told I can “carry a tune”, but have no idea what my actual singing voice is like. I tend to try to match the person I’m singing if possible.

Is someone who hasn’t had any professional training going to benefit from starting lessons with you? I can’t tell if you specialize in leveling people up, or if you can start from the ground up.

*Also I couldn’t figure out how to submit this not in all caps… not intentionally yelling 🙂

    • by Matt Ramsey Posted September 10, 2019 1:09 pm

Hey Lincoln, thanks for your message! Yes, actually, helping people find their true voice and leveling up is a huge part of what I do. A private lesson is a great way to explore what the next steps are since I’ll be able to see where you’re at. Feel free to book a lesson!

Or if you’re outside Austin, you’ll need to book a 30 or 60 minute Skype Lesson.

    • by Matt Ramsey Posted May 2, 2020 1:37 pm

  • by Carol Pigott Posted July 29, 2020 9:39 am

    Hi Matt

I am thinking about signing on for your first evaluation. I’ve been singing all my life but mostly in the past 25 years. I’m 58 years old and am not ready to hang up my microphone. I have worked to develop my voice. My last singing group had me singing soprano and it always felt uncomfortable.

I’m more comfortable in the Alto / Contralto range but it’s like I have two voices and I’m having trouble with the transition between the two. I believe I’ve taken my voice as far as I can take it on my own. I’ve tried exercises and without coaching – I tend to give up on them. Maybe you can help me. I want to take my voice to a higher level. I know I can if I just had the right techniques and tools.

    Thanks
    Carol

    • by Matt Ramsey Posted July 29, 2020 12:05 pm

Hey Carol, thanks for reaching out. I’d love to help you!
I think you’ll get a lot out of it.
      Feel free to sign up.

      • by Madhuri Posted December 13, 2020 2:37 am

I’ve never had singing classes before.
But I am very much interested in singing.

I don’t even understand how to differentiate someone as alto, contralto, soprano e.t.c.,

Because lessons are designed based on their voice type, does this helpful for beginners?

Do I receive any feedback on my singing journey

        • by Matt Ramsey Posted December 21, 2020 8:27 am

Hey Madhuri, yes absolutely. These lessons are completely customized to your own voice and is very helpful for beginners.
And yes, we will discuss what your singing journey will look like depending on your skill level.

  • by Heidi Birnbaum Posted December 21, 2020 10:52 am

    Hello.
It is my dream to become a singer. I have natural talent and have been scouring your website for any tips to become better. I do not have the time nor the money to have lessons and wanted to know if you had any pro tips for me

    Thank you

    • by Matt Ramsey Posted December 21, 2020 11:54 am

Hey Heidi, thanks for your interest. But if it’s your dream to become a singer, you need to invest a LOT of time and possibly some money to achieve that dream.

Learning to sing well can take a long time and you need to commit to practicing regularly to get results.

      Best of luck!
